SERL (Smart Energy Research Lab) is a UK research programme led by University College London (UCL). We combine survey answers with smart meter readings to understand how households use energy — helping inform policy and improve affordability.
This page is for people who received an invitation email and use a prepayment (pay-as-you-go) smart meter. If that’s not you, you may not be eligible for this recruitment round.
What you’ll do
~15 minutes- Submit your postal address so we can post you a letter with a QR code.
- Use the QR code to complete an online survey about your home and energy use.
- If eligible, you’ll receive a voucher after completing the survey.
Your data stays protected
Your details are stored securely and used only for this research project. Findings are reported in aggregated form and you won’t be identifiable publicly.

People who received an invitation email, live in England/Scotland/Wales, and use a prepayment (pay-as-you-go) smart meter.
Why we send a letter
We use a posted letter with a QR code to verify your address and guide you to the correct survey and onboarding steps.
You stay in control
Participation is voluntary. You can withdraw at any time and you won’t need any equipment installed or home visits for this stage.

No. Results are analysed and reported in aggregate. Individuals are not identifiable in public outputs.
